Did You Know?
- Nearly 10 percent of New Jersey's public school children have some form of hearing problem or
hearing loss.
- Many insurance providers in the state cover the cost of annual
hearing tests. However, few cover the cost of hearing aids even when medically
necessary.
- No state or federal mandates require hearing aid coverage by
insurers.
- Hundreds of hard of
hearing and deaf NJ children are unable to afford hearing aids. Hearing aid insurance
legislation has been stalled since 1998.
- A child who cannot hear
in a classroom usually falls behind, may never
catch up, and may cost the state of NJ
hundreds of thousands of dollars.
